Weekly Wrap

This week I learned:

  • Twinkie-frying self-parody Paula Deen has developed Type-2 diabetes (as well as, naturally, a detailed plan for making a buck off of it).
  • Columbia businesspeeps are hoping to graft additional awesome onto our downtown for SEC football. (Aside: I applaud the effort, but wonder if this will come off as more contrived or less contrived than the City Hall keyhole statue. My guess is that Tiger Town in The DistrictTM will take the early lead, but then the statue will sprout speakers and play Lee Greenwood tunes 24-7, thus ending the competition forever.)
  • Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione wants (some) beer geeks to chill the eff out.
  • Raw kale can make a wicked, do-ahead salad.
  • Chuck Norris walks among us.
  • Mid-Missouri Restaurant Week is coming up starting today. Surprise!!! Go to this website to learn almost nothing more about the event.

In case you missed it, Marcia’s cover story this week was on eating healthier. Lots of greens and whatnot. The harvest squash bowl at Broadway Brewery looks particularly awesome. Enjoy the weekend and eat well.

  1. Something I just learned — evidently there is a new Chinese buffet restaurant in the old Bandana’s location called Eastern Harbor. They have a coupon in the Columbia Marketplace Magazine, although it is not listed on the website with all of the city and county food inspections. Has anyone heard of it or tried it yet?

  2. Sorry about the lack of info on the Mid Missouri Restaurant Week website. Basically if you eat at the participating restaurants and order the restaurant week special each participating restaurant will donate 10% of those sales to The Buddy pack Program of the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri. At Boone Tavern we are featuring our specials on our website, http://www.boonetavern.com. This is our first ever restaurant week and appreciate feedback.

  3. “I got diabetes, y’all!!!!” This from the woman who published a pasta salad recipe that called for–wait for it–one cup of sugar in the dressing. That’s not a misprint. ONE CUP OF SUGAR.
