Friday rant

So the ridiculous annual horror show that is the MTV Video Music Awards happened this week. Didn’t hear about it? Count yourself among the lucky. From the opening act – Lady Gaga dressed as a 50s greaser dude and talking for ten unendurable minutes – to Lil’ Wayne’s dull, bleep-strewn mess of a finale, it was shockingly bad. There was – I swear to God there was – a Britney Spears tribute, complete with dancers reenacting her “greatest hits.” I couldn’t look away.

There was at least one exception. British singer Adele took the stage and performed – with simple elegance and emotion – her hit song, “Someone Like You.” She was mesmerizing. Yes, Beyonce’s pregnant – Adele stole the show.

The video below is her performance at the British equivalent of the VMAs. I have to link to that because MTV doesn’t make the show’s content available online, but perhaps we should thank them for that small favor.

  1. I actually think the Brit version is better. Adele seemed just a hair forced on the MTV event, probably at least in part because the audience wouldn’t STFU and let her sing. In the Brit video you link to, she brings the entire stadium to a dead silent halt. The video gives me the shivers. It is so amazing.
