4 Quick Notes

Sycamore Restaurant: What to do when vegetarian posole appears on Sycamore’s menu? Order it, but add the braised pork belly appetizer. Throw in a Daniel Boulud-worthy charcuterie plate and Mrs. SMEs’ perfectly-cooked filet and you get your best Sycamore meal ever. Amazing.

Pickleman’s Gourmet Deli: Finally made it into “Columbia’s Best Place for Sandwiches.” Forgot what my Italian Club tasted like before I left.

Five Guys: I’ve been twice so far and the burgers are every bit as good as I remember in Northern Virginia. Just don’t order the single burger – the ratio simply doesn’t work. Go all-in don’t go at all.

Mississippi Fish Shack: Is this the best place in town nobody’s going to? Kim is turning out good fried catfish, sure. But broaden your horizons. The fried chicken is the best I’ve had in town and the oyster po’boy is one of our better sandwiches (do order sauce on the side though…it can be heavy). They’re not downtown anymore, having shoehorned themselves into the Phillips 66 station at W. Ash and Stadium.

  1. ok, here’s my thing with Mississippi fish shack: I’ve been twice, food is great, dealing with the counter is a pain in the ass. For an empty restaurant they say NO an awful lot.

  2. Tonight, the three of us had the redfish, duck, and halibut after cod and cheese plate appetizers; before the caramel cheesecake and pound cake with strawberries and Spanky’s. Pound cake was close to being dry, otherwise the entire list was stupendous!

  3. If I had to vote, I’d say to OAE, go back to the ribs. But the halibut was delicious and those mushrooms were soooo good. Just be proud, dad, that you “branched”. What a wonderful dinner!! Thanks again

  4. Well that was weird. You guys all have each others’ cell numbers, right? Text. 😉

As to Pam’s comment, they do run out of stuff. I’ve been asking for andouille for a month and still: nothing. Even suggested a couple of vendors. Maybe I’m too laid back but I like the food and the vibe in general enough…I like the place.

  5. Tip on fast service at Five Guys: If you arrive at the busy burger joint and are disappointed to find 27 people in front of you, grab your phone and order online. We did this on a Saturday afternoon and were picking up our food before the girl who was originally in front of us when we got there had even ordered! Order was accurate and ready in 7 mins as promised from the online confirmation.
