Morel season draws to a close

If this was the year you were going to get serious and get out morel hunting, I have bad news for you: that time has likely passed. I went out today for an hour or so with the guy behind the Mid-Missouri Morels and Mushrooms blog. He found a dozen or so, but only a handful after I got there. Me? I found this little fella, a late-season grey morel. The number of stumps indicated deer (or some other critters) had been through recently. But all is not lost for the curious mushroomer. Chanterelles will start coming on in a few weeks and unlike morels, you’ll have very little competition snatching them up.
