Morel Madness at Rock Bridge State Park

Not that you’d know it from my brief and unguided excursion today, but morel season is in full swing. If, like me, you’ve enjoyed the fruits of other people’s labor but never successfully foraged your own, Monday night’s your chance to learn from an expert. The man behind Mid Missouri Morels and Mushrooms will be giving a presentation at Rock Bridge State Park:

Morel Madness – Monday April 25, 2011 – 6:30 pm, Gilbert Shelter, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park (rain venue – Park Office Building)

  1. @#%$! morels! We’ve looked every year on our place and only found a couple isolated ones. Don’t know if we’re just really bad morel hunters or there just aren’t any here. We have enough diverse terrain, not to mention elms, that we’ve always figured it shouldn’t be that hard. But we were out this morning for a long 2-hour walk all through the woods & fields here and saw nary a thing. Anyone good at morel hunting who wants a challenge is welcome to give us a try, I’d love to figure it out…

  2. We found a pound of them in our back yard on E. Parkway Dr. a few years ago. In the eight years we have been here that is the only success we had, even hunting for them. Who would have thunk to look in the back yard.

  3. The only ones we’ve found on our farm were 1 on the rim of our septic lagoon, out in the sun on crappy soil, and 2 along a path right next to the house. Yet many acres of mixed woods and good bottomland soil have yielded nothing. I’m beginning to think they’re a massive hoax…
