How we lost our way

Funny-sad and a convenient distillation of how adrift American food culture was 50 years ago, the Post-Dispatch revisits the “I Hate to Cook Book,” by St. Louis’ Peg Bracken:

“Facts must be faced,” Bracken wrote. “Vegetables simply don’t taste as good as most other things do.”

The recipe for “Pedro’s Special,” a casserole featuring a bag of corn chips, includes this winner:

Before you serve it, strew some shredded lettuce and chopped raw onion on top, for that Old-Tyme Mexicali look.
