Mrs. SMEs and I have tickets to Thailand this November. We’re scheduled to be gone fifteen days, but things aren’t looking great in Bangkok. Basically, a 2006 coup installed an arguably enlightened despot and a lot of the people are starting to get pissed. Other people are pissed with them. Yesterday someone shot a high-profile general affiliated with the protesters in the head. Bottom line, we’re glad we bought the trip insurance.
At the same time, our enthusiasm isn’t much dampened. If it hits the fan in Bangkok we’ll revise plans to spend more of our time in the countryside (like Chaing Mai, pictured above). If it hits the fan everywhere, we’ll go somewhere else. But I’d rather not. Steve McCurry’s unpublished photos of Southeast Asia help explain why.
