Found: Lake restaurants that only suck a little

After an spectacularly bad canneloni at Li’l Rizzo’s Saturday – stuffed with Hamburger Helper and swimming in a thick, utterly flavorless “cream sauce” with raw mushrooms – my patience for restaurants at the Lake of the Ozarks took another blow. But then two came to the rescue, sorta.

El Caporal is a new Mexican place near the square in downtown Camdenton. They have nice asada tacos, Negra Modelo and my personal favorite hot sauce, El Yucateco green, on the table. My chili relleno was above average once I scraped the eggy breading off the outside. Otherwise, an enchilada, tostada, and ground beef taco were all pretty worthless.

 Also okay was Chicago Brothers Pizza and Pub between Camdenton and Osage Beach. We had a nice sandwich (the “Ultimate Italian”) that came with homemade (!) potato chips. A small pizza was acceptable. Nachos had a salad’s worth of lettuce on top, but were otherwise fine. And it’s a little smoky, even with nobody in the place. They have Magic Hat beer on tap, which is impressive.
