El Espolon, the Mexican place in Concordia, is not worth a try. Each of our four entrees on a stop today were weak.Burritos, enchiladas, carne asada, tacos, all sucked…and each contained a strange amount of cinnamon. Pass on it.

  1. Dunno why cinnamon was an issue. Cinnamon is an essential ingredient in lots of Mexican and Southwestern (esp. New Mexican but not, I think, Tex-Mex) cooking. More information on why the stuff sucked – bad meat, too much grease, canned meat, Velveeta cheese? – would help.

  2. Jeff, what do you get at Biffle’s? I’ve been very unimpressed but would be willing to give it another go.

Frank, yes, cinnamon is used in Mexican food. But the burrito had it, the enchilada had it, the tacos had it, etc. It was everywhere, and yet, the food was bland. My carne asada was tough (forgivable) and flavorless (not so much). The “taco meat” was about what you’d get dumping a McCormick’s seasoning packet into some hamburger meat at home (but, with cinnamon).

Still, it was nowhere near the worst Mexican food we had on the trip. Desperate for sustenance rolling into Pratt, Kansas, we stopped into Taco Delite. Unspeakable, inedible horrors ensued. Everything topped with “chili.” It was sub-junior high Mexican. Sub-Taco Bell. Christ.

  3. Scott, I had the brisket sandwich at Biffle’s. It is not the best BBQ I have ever had, but it was tasty. The brisket was not dry and the sauce was flavorful, but not overwhelming. It equeals or beats what we can get in Columbia, which I know is not an overwhelming endorsement, but…
