James Beard finalists named

Mike Odette of Sycamore, a semifinalist for Best Chef: Midwest in the James Beard Foundation honors, did not make the list of finalists. That’s too bad, but it’s not like the guy lost out to Applebee’s.

He has spoken glowingly of St. Louis’ Niche – a finalist: “One of the best meals I’ve had in the last five years.” I’ve been personally wowed by another finalist, Bluestem in Kansas City. Two favorites from Washington, D.C. – Restaurant Eve and Obelisk – made the cut as well. So no slight to Sycamore, which turns out some of the best food in the region.

(and I will report on Niche following dinner there May 23)

  1. If he is competing with Eve (in Alexandria VA) he is among the best of the best. Congrats. I’ll try next time I am in COMO….if you can pull me away from the Main Squeeze.

  2. May 23rd? Atta boy! Be sure to report back on what you have, you’re in for a real treat. Just know that Gerard loves pork as much as we do, and you have to save room for dessert. Niche was voted “best dessert” in St. Louis. You have me wanting to go back now just thinking about it!!
